Pre-verb is reverb that arrives before its source instead of after it. Applied to a vocal, it sounds like the word is being inhaled — a swell rises out of silence and gets swallowed by the first syllable. It is made by reversing a copy of the word, printing a long reverb tail onto it, reversing the render, then sliding that swell so it ends exactly where the dry vocal begins.

What is the pre-verb effect?

Pre-verb is the umbrella term for any reverb placed ahead of the sound that caused it. The classic version is printed by hand with a double reverse; newer plugins simulate it in real time. Either way, the signature is the same: a tail that grows from silence, peaks at the moment the dry sound lands, then vanishes into it.

On vocals this reads as suction. The line does not start — it gets pulled in. Producers use it to mark the first word of a chorus, to lift a single phrase out of a verse, or to make a whispered line feel like it is arriving from somewhere else. Because the swell is made from the vocal’s own material, its pitch and tone already match the voice, so it sits in the mix without extra carving.

The technique also covers sound design outside music. A door slam with a pre-verb tail reads as ominous, since a room that grows instead of decaying signals that something is wrong. Trailer editors use the same shape ahead of impacts and title cards. What changes between uses is only the decay length and how far under the dry sound the swell is buried — the shape itself never changes.

Why does pre-verb sound like the vocal is being sucked in?

The inhale impression comes from a reversed amplitude envelope, not from anything mystical about reverb. Every acoustic sound the ear has ever heard follows the same order: energy arrives, then the room disperses it and the level falls. Attack first, decay second. A reversed tail inverts that order — quiet first, loudest last — and the brain has no acoustic model for it.

Two properties of the reversal do the work. The first is direction: a slow rise into a sharp transient is the exact envelope of an intake of breath, so the ear reaches for the nearest physical explanation and hears suction. The second is content: because the tail is built from the word’s own frequencies, the swell is already voice-coloured, which is why it feels attached to the singer rather than layered on top. How do you make pre-verb on a vocal?

Work on a copy, never the vocal itself. Pull the target word or short phrase onto its own clip, reverse it, print a long wet reverb onto the reversed copy, then reverse the render. The audio flips back to normal and the tail now leads it.

Then comes the part that decides whether it works: trimming and placement. Cut everything after the transient so only the rise survives — the printed file still contains a backwards copy of the word after the swell, and leaving it in is the most common way this effect goes wrong. Slide the remaining swell so its last sample meets the first sample of the untouched dry word. Any gap between them breaks the illusion and the swell reads as a separate sound.

Finally, treat the swell as its own instrument. Put it on a dedicated track, high-pass it around 200–300 Hz so it does not cloud the mix before the vocal lands, and set the level so the rise is felt rather than heard. The dry vocal stays completely untouched underneath; pre-verb is an addition, not a processed replacement.

Which settings control how hard the pre-verb pulls?

Four controls do nearly all the work.

Decay length sets how far ahead the swell begins. Three seconds pulls a word forward inside a bar; six seconds turns the effect into a section transition. Because the tail is printed, decide this before rendering — you can shorten a swell afterwards, but you cannot grow one.

Wet level at print time determines how clean the result is. A 100 percent wet render gives a swell with no source audio inside it, which is what you want. If the tool only prints wet plus dry, expect a backwards copy of the word riding inside the swell, and trim harder to compensate.

Reverb algorithm shapes the rise. Halls and plates decay evenly, so reversed they climb smoothly. Room and spring presets decay unevenly and produce a lumpy swell with audible steps, which occasionally suits a rougher production but rarely sounds like an inhale.

Pre-fade gap is the detail most people miss. Leaving 30–50 ms of silence between the end of the swell and the dry transient makes the vocal read as separate from the effect; butting them together makes the word appear to swallow the tail. Both are usable — the gap is a stylistic choice, not an error, but it should be deliberate.

Can you make pre-verb without a DAW?

Yes. The effect needs only two capabilities — reverse and reverb — plus the ability to render between them.
