A reverse snare is a snare hit played backwards: the drum’s short decay becomes a fast rising swell that pulls into the next beat. What does a reversed snare actually sound like?
A snare hit is nearly all attack: a crack at the front, then 200–500 ms of rattling decay from the wires under the head. Flip that recording and the envelope inverts. The clip now starts near silence, rushes upward through the snare buzz, and stops dead at what used to be the stick hitting the head.
That rush is short and percussive, which is what separates a reverse snare from its bigger relatives. How do you make one, step by step?
- Record or import a snare hit. One clean hit, ringing out fully. The decay is the entire effect, so a dry, heavily gated snare gives you very little to work with — pick a sample with some tail, or add reverb before reversing.
- Reverse the clip. The decay becomes the rise and the transient moves to the end.
- Trim the trailing silence. Cut everything after the transient so the clip’s last sample is the loudest one.
- Trim the front to length. Half a beat for a percussive lift, one to two beats for a build. At 120 BPM, one beat is 500 ms.
- Land the peak on the downbeat. Slide the clip so its end sits on beat one. Add a 5–10 ms fade at the front.
- Export as WAV so it survives further editing.
Step 3 is the one people skip, and it is the one that causes the classic complaint that a reversed hit “feels late.” Any silence after the hit in the original recording ends up in front of the swell once flipped, delaying the peak by exactly its own length. Where should a reverse snare go in the bar?
Immediately before the thing you want emphasized, ending on it. The reversed hit’s loudest instant is the arrival, so the placement question is always “what should this land on,” not “where should this start.”
Five placements cover almost everything. A one-beat swell across the last beat of a bar, peaking on beat 1, is the standard lift into a new phrase. A half-beat swell starting on the “and” of 4 is a subtle push most listeners never consciously hear. Two beats before a chorus, peaking on the first chorus hit, is an obvious build that reads as production. A one- to two-beat swell sitting under a forward drum fill and peaking with the fill’s last hit thickens what is already there. That last placement is the least used and often the most effective: a quiet reversed snare under the beat before a vocal enters makes the entrance feel intentional without adding anything the listener consciously hears. Should you reverse one hit or a whole fill?
One hit for transitions; a whole fill only when you want the rhythm itself to sound backwards.
Reversing a single hit flips one envelope. Reversing a four-hit fill flips the envelope of every hit and the order of the hits, so a fill that accelerates into the downbeat now decelerates away from it. That is a real effect, not a mistake — it is the sound of a fill inhaling — but it changes the groove, not just the texture.
Two practical notes. First, evenly spaced fills reverse better than uneven ones: 16th-note runs stay musical flipped, while a fill with a distinctive rhythmic hook becomes conspicuously wrong. Second, reversing a fill removes every transient from the front of every hit, so the result is mushy on its own. How do you stop a reverse snare sounding cheap?
Keep it short, keep it quiet, and give it something to land on.
The three ways reversed snares go wrong are all length or level problems. Too long, and a percussive lift turns into an obvious swoosh that announces the transition a full bar early. Too loud, and the missing attack makes it read as a sound effect rather than part of the kit — reversed hits usually want to sit several dB below the forward snare they came from. Two fixes cover most cases. Overlap the reversed clip’s final 20–30 ms with the forward hit on the downbeat, so the forward transient masks the cut.
